Neha Uberoi interview

nehapicEx Pro player Neha Uberoi  sat down to answer some questions with Mark Gellard about life on the pro tour. Neha Uberoi was ranked as high as 196 in the World and now attends Princeton University. Click the 'read more' link below to find out what Neha had to say about being a professional tennis player on the WTA/ITF tennis tours.

Mark: You had a great career and beat many top ranked players, what do you attribute to your success?

Neha: Thanks Mark.  I attribute my success to a lot of aspects. I think my family’s selfless support, my hard work on the court and off it as well as my disciplined life style paid off. I was also fortunate to have a few passionate coaches who really helped me succeed.

Mark: Did you have a consistent coach throughout your career?

Neha: I did not have a consistent coach. I had a handful of coaches that helped me through different stages of my career.

Mark: What was your most memorable match?

Neha: My most memorable match was at the 2005 US Open where I got to play against my childhood idol, Martina Navratilova. I don’t think I was focused on the match, I just kept staring at her. When I was four years old, I watched Martina play in the same stadium I was playing her in!

Mark: You have 2 younger sisters that play tennis is there anything you think they could do differently from you when trying to achieve tennis success?

Neha: We have learned a lot from the tennis tour.  We know the extent to which academies can help players, the importance of a footwork and a strength coach as well as nutrition. The twins have a more relaxed and healthy attitude towards tennis, which is definitely something different from me! Niki and Nimi also have different tennis goals then I did. They are going to play for Brown University.

Mark: If you could do it all again would you do it differently?

Neha: Wow, that is a tough question. I have been off the tour for almost 3 years and I reflect on it often. If I could do it all again, I would have a more balanced lifestyle. I know this is hard as pro athletes live and die for their sport. I think having something important to me off the court (while still on tour) would have helped me keep a better perspective and prevented me from trying too hard. I also would have trusted my instinct. I was a very natural player but had too much information in my head. Too much chatter. I wish I could have had more self-belief to listen to my gut. I’m learning to do that now but it’s a different world off the court.
